Welcome to the Rhydeilian Stud, where Tom & Ann Hughes breed Welsh Ponies of Cob Type and Welsh Cobs on the island of Anglesey. The first pony owned by the stud was a Section B called Tanlan Gwenora, purchased by Tom on the same day his son Alun was born! She was shown for several years before being sold to the Telynau Stud.
Menai Cadfridog was purchased as a foal at the Builth Sales and Betws Iona, the foundation mare for the Section Cs, was bought at 3 days old and has proved to be a valuable broodmare, as well as a successful show mare for the Rhydeilian Stud, being champion at Anglesey, Llanrwst & Flint, 3rd at the Royal Welsh. Her first foal was Rhydeilian Iris (by Menai Cadfridog) and showing her as a yearling gave Tom & Ann's son Alun his first taste of showing welsh ponies and cobs. Daughter Eleri also has an involvement in the breeding and showing of welsh ponies and cobs, under the prefix Rafon, although she has not chosen to develop this into a business like Alun with the Godebog Stud.
The 2008 mare, Rhydeilian Naughty but Nice, (out of Rhydeilian Iris and pictured left as a 3 year old) has been a consistent performer in the youngstock shows, successes include 2nd at the Winter Fair as a foal, 1st at Lampeter as a yearling, 1st & Reserve Female at Glanusk, Bronze Medal Rosette at Eglwysbach as well as a string of firsts again in 2011.
In 2002, Rhydeilian purchased their first welsh cob namely Arosfa Morning Lady and her daughter Arosfa Morning Princess. In 2005 the resident stallion, Trefaes Black Flyer, was purchased as a foal from the Cob Sales and the following year Cascob Powys Princess was also purchased as a foal from the same sale. Trefaes Black Flyer has been a fantastic investment, winning bronze as a 2 year old, with bronze and silver medals as 3 year old and silver again in 2011. He has also sired a number of outstanding foals, including Rhydeilian Orchid (pictured below) who sold for £7,500 at the 2009 Autumn Sales and last year 2 more exceptional foals by him were again entered for the Cob Sales in October.
